fotos por mi

divagaciones pt. 2

Finalmente, viendo esa foto, me sentí afortunado.

Fitzcarraldo

I finally saw the movie "Fitzcarraldo". For some strange reason I had not seeing this movie by Werner Herzog. Well, maybe I know the reason. It was because I did not want to invest two and a half hours in it.

But then I saw the documentary "Burden of Dreams", a behind the scenes on the making of this film, on TCM a few weeks ago and was fascinated by the whole production of this movie. The setbacks, the whole madness of the idea of filming a movie deep in the Amazon jungle. At one point the main actor literally wants to kill the director. After watching this unique documentary, I needed to see "Fitzacarraldo".

And I was surprised by it. It was odd, maddening, but fascinating. Klaus Kinski is perfect in the title role as a man who wants to create an Opera House deep in the jungle and sets out to accomplish that. The ending, without spoiling anything, is strangely moving and sweet. One could see Spielberg doing an ending like it.

I waited a long time to see it. But I'm glad I finally did.

Saturday Night Live

I had not seen an episode of "Saturday Night Live" for years, maybe over 15 years. I remember when it was the hippest thing on tv. When I was in graduate school, people would talk about that Saturday's skits and music. It is really interesting to see it has survived.

This week there was a lot of buzz online about the upcoming SNL episode because Lady Gaga was both musical guest and guest performer. So I watched. And I have absolutely no clue as to why this show is still on tv. I've never seen such an unfunny, less clever or funny group of people. There was not a single even remotely funny joke or situation. It was desperate and just plain awful.

I felt sorry for Lady Gaga. She really gave it her best. And she does have a flair for comedy, but there was little she could do when she was fed such bad lines and bad jokes. Actually the only good parts of the show were the ones in which she was performing. She is a great performer and has a knack for creating catchy pop songs. Thank goodness for that because the rest of SNL was just pathetic.

King of Marvin Gardens

Jack Nicholson became such an icon with his "One Flew.." crazy guy persona that we have forgotten that there wasa time when he was a fine, low-key actor. In fact, a great actor. Today I saw a movie from 1972 that shows how amazing he could be. It's "King of Marvin Gardens", director by Bob Rafelson. One of those movies from the 70's that were based on characters and not on high scale action. In it Nicholson plays a talk radio host dealing with the grand schemes of his brother (Bruce Dern). The acting is excellent. Ellen Burstyn has another award worthy performance and there is in the movie a really interesting actress, Julia Ann Robinson, who unfortunately died in a fire a year after the film's release.

Check this movie out. And see how good Jack Nicholson before he became lazy.
