Legend of Hell House (1973)

The Legend of Hell House."

The Bicycle Thief

I admit I'm not a great fan of Italian cinema. Maybe because I've always found it too over the top. It could also be that the first Italian movies that I saw where broad Italian sex comedies or movies like "Life is Beautiful" that push sentimentality to a point that I find annoying.

Still, when I saw that TCM was doing a night of Italian Neorealist movies, I decided to give them a shot. And I'm glad I did, if only because I was able to enjoy "The Bicycle Thief", a really wonderful movie. Filmed with amateur actors in the streets of Rome, this amazing movie tells the simple story of a man who finally finds a job, but one that requires a bicycle. And then, that bicycle is stolen. This is a heartbreaking movie that moves one in so many ways. And it is not over the top. It is true and honest. And the performances by Lamberto Maggiorani and Enzo Staiola are magnificent. Both are truly outstanding.

I loved this movie. And I now want to get the Criterion DVD for extras.

Jason and the Argonauts

Today I felt like revisiting a movie from my childhood. A movie I saw on tv when I was a boy and that blew me away. It's "Jason and the Argonauts", a masterpiece by Ray Harryhausen. This is probably the best Saturday afternoon movie. It is hugely entertaining and fun. Sure some of the acting is way over the top, but that makes it even more special. And speaking of special, the special effects are still as wonderful as ever. The stop motion animation here is truly awesome. Just look at that scene when Hercules steals gold from the Talos vault. The Talos statue comes to life and you can tell how mad it is. In way, the creatures by Harryhausen are the best actors. They say so much with only a slight glance, with simply a low-key movement. They are the real stars here and make very clear just what a genius Harryhausen really was.

So take a Saturday afternoon, get some popcorn and some soft drinks and enjoy the marvels of the one and only "Jason and the Argonauts".

Ball of Fire
