La esquina de Maymó

Antes de que aparecieran los 7-11 y otros convenience stores, en Condado-Santurce teníamos la tienda de Maymó. Localizado justo al lado de un enorme supermercado Pueblo donde se conseguí de todo, Maymó era el lugar para ir cuando uno no quería pasar por la usual pesadilla de las largas filas del supermercado. También era el lugar donde cuanod niño uno conseguía los chicles Bazooka y los Fiesta de Ponce Candy.

Lo interesante de esta tiendita ta era que era un verdadero desastre en términos de organización. Casi nada había sido sacado de cajas así que el lugar parecía mas un almacén que una tienda. Usualmente uno tenía que pedir lo que uno buscaba y Maymó, su dueño, lo buscaba entre las cajas. EL lugar no era lo más limpio del mundo, y siempre habían cuentos de que estaba lleno de cucarachas y ratones. Y no era de extrañar, pero a la gente no le importaba si conseguía lo que quería rápidamente.

Un artículo sobre esta tiendita tiene que incluir algo sobre su dueño, el señor Maymó, un señor bajito y algo excéntrico. Éste vivía en un segundo piso sobre la tiendita en una especie de casita/choza. No era la persona más amable, uno podía ir una y otra vez y no recibir ni una sonrisa.Me imagino que era un buen negociante aunque uno siempre pensaba que con la excelente localización de su tienda (Calle Wilson, esquina De Diego), pudo haber hecho mucho más dinero y no tener que vivir en una choza.

La era de la tiendita de Maymó terminó de una forma inesperada y violenta cuando el señor Maymó fue asesinado. No me acuerdo de los detalles, si fue en un asalto o por otra razón. Me acuerdo que en la noticia del periódico decía que el dueño del lugar vivía con "una concubina".

Con la muerte de Maymó, el lugar fue arreglado y se convirtió en una librería Bell, Book and Candle.

Cinerama by Andres Roura

NOTE: I've decided to post some of Andres Roura's stories from movie theaters in Santurce. This one is about the Cinerama. I wrote him that I recall seeing "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" there. And he had a story about that:


"... “no me des cuerda” (for the unfortunate monolinguals: don’t get me started). When “Chitty-Chitty” opened at the Cinerama, we got the print late afternoon the day of the 8 PM “charity gala premiere” for a local organization. We did not have time to screen the picture in advance, we bought it (actually rented it) “sight unseen” as they say in the industry. At about 6PM, the Cinerama chief projectionist called me. We had a problem: the opening credits on the film had the “Sound of Music” opening credits soundtrack instead of the “Chitty” opening credits music. Called Jamie at United Artists who called UA in NY. Nothing could be done, we could not get a new first reel until the next day at about noon. I remembered I had the “Chitty” soundtrack LP in the office which was not far away, at the Cobian Center where the Radio City/Excelsior twins were, and went to get it. Back to the Cinerama. “Rafa” was a terrific projectionist, a graduate of the 70mm spectaculars at the Metropolitan. I told him: start the picture silent, play the first track of the LP on the record player we used for playing music while the audience came in, and as soon as the “Directed by” credit fades out in the screen, drop the phonograph and raise the projector’s volume. It worked like a beauty. No one new the difference. Cross my heart and hope to die this is a true story. Now I have to do some work in the office.
